audience feedback

Footfall

Brilliant performance, engaging, effective use of humour and addressed a serious issue.
Afshan & Sara

As moving as ever and universal themes - very thought provoking
Clarissa Young

Wonderfully put together. The story needs to be told wide and far.
Sanjan Haque

Nicely done and very topical, needs to be told more often.
Arpan Priyambada

Engaging play, well constructed chronological vortex.
Tamoghno Dutta

Brilliant idea to set the scene in reverse chronological order - a very interesting insite into how the narratives of few and corruption play out for those who have power.
Emily Falconer

Uttoradhikaar - The Inheritance

It was refreshing to escape the association of the sparkle of 'Bollywood' that is always seen as the hallmark of Indian culture today in the UK and see the play 'Uttoradhikaar' instead, at the Edinburgh Fringe, put on by Eastern Thespians. What made the play most appealing was its focus on Goa, not as a tourist destination but as a place which has been fought over and sought after by powerful nations. The play explores questions of identity and belonging in a poignant study of characters with diverse clashing loyalties and interests. The acting is powerful, the dialogue absorbing, the drama gripping and intense, the effects meaningful and the music haunting. It is a play in Bengali with excellent English surtitles which allow a British audience to remain totally immersed and engaged.

As the Vice-chairman of Bengali Performing Arts in Glasgow, I was so impressed by the professionalism, the script, and the highly credible performances of the actors; I felt I was in Goa in 1958. Everything about Uttoradhikaar was excellent, even the programmes that were distributed. Eastern Thespians are a fine example of what the rich Bengali culture and heritage have to offer us here in UK. Congratulations to all at Eastern Thespians and I look forward to your next trip to Scotland.
Dr. Rose Mary Harley OBE
Vice-Chairman, Bengali Performing Arts, Glasgow

As a native Bengali speaker, I was most impressed by the quality of the language and the professionalism of the performers.
It was a superb staging of a drama, drawing parallels with the perilous periods of 1958, when the independence of the Portuguese Goa was threatened with a distant past when the "Govapuri" state was equally under attack.
It is, indeed, an excellent portrayal of a drama with the serious question posed around identity and belonging. Warmest congratulations to Eastern Thespians!
